Maier, Suzie

Suzie Majikol-Maier was born and raised in Penampang Sabah, Malaysia. From an early age, drawing has always been her love, passion and focus. This passion has lead her on a quest, a global odessy to find her own path in creating the artwork she is doing today.

Maier obtained her fine arts degree from the School of Art & Design, Mara Institute of Technology, Shah Alam Malaysia in 1985. As an artist who responds to color, Maier’s work portrays distinct impressionistic influences. Over the years she has painted a variety of subjects in oil, acrylic and pastel, but people and animals remain her favorite subjects. Her artwork has been shown in group and solo gallery exhibitions in Malaysia and at Gallery Mona in Japan. A recipient of several awards for artistic achievement, Maier’s work appears in private collections in Malaysia, Singapore, United Kingdom, Japan and the United States. She is represented by the Sabah Art Gallery in Malaysia.

Her desire to see new places and work in a more progressive artistic environment has brought Maier to the United States in 2006. Some twelve time zones away from her homeland, Suzie has enjoyed traveling to the Arizona desert and Alaskan Glaciers in search of new subjects and inspiration for her art. Native Americans and wildlife now dominate her work. She and her husband, also a painter, live and work in her new home in Marietta, Georgia. Her lively style of drawing and painting, with the use of contrasting colors, is a delight to anyone who appreciate fine art. She has quickly become part of the local artist community.

As a teenager, I was profoundly and inexplicably fascinated by the Impressionists, so much so that I instinctively knew how I wanted to paint. My painting style is versatile: alternating between realism and impressionism quite easily, but my preference is for the latter as it allows me to be
bold and adventurous with my colors. As an impressionist, I look past detail, instead focusing on colors to dominate my work. I use contrasting colors in proximity to activate an abstract interplay between light and form, allowing a viewer’s eye to blend them into a more shimmering sensation of color. My drawings and paintings are personal interpretation of the way I perceive my subject and my emotional response to it. Each work is a soul-searching experience; a never ending adventure.
