Gjertson, David

Gallery 4463 Artist

David believes he is the “accidental artist”. By profession he is a landscape architect educated at the University of Wisconsin with architecture training at the University of Minnesota Graduate School of Architecture. His professional career is centered on urban design and expressions of urban form. David’s Midwestern background and “Midwestern” family value system provides a rather unique approach to design. He has a fascination with architectural forms and perspective born out of an education in both landscape architecture and architecture. Inspiration for his work comes from the landscape and architecture of Georgia and friends who have given David great encouragement.
..

David is employed by a large consulting firm and continues to manage urban design projects in the Southeast. The ability to draw has placed him in demand while younger professionals work diligently on computer graphics and computer-generated perspective design. His “work sketches” are quick affairs with pen and pencil with the overriding thought, “time is money”. He is sought after by clients who appreciate a more “artistic approach” and the timeless ability of an artist.

One afternoon, he made the decision to slow down the process. He put aside the corporate mind-set and concentrated on enjoying the moment by creating illustrations with far more detail and a more studied approach. The “accident” happened when a particular friend mentioned that what David regarded as a “hobby” should be shared with others. The interest shown in his art by the generous people at the 4463 Gallery bears this out.

David was trained using the simple tools of a drafter and utilizes rapidiograph ink pens on mylar and prismacolor markers to add color on the translucent film. The result is finely detailed hand drawn sketches with soft expressions of color. His drawings at the 4463 Gallery are a recent development brought out by thirty years of quick sketches drawn for hundreds of impatient clients. Presently, time has become a friend and ally as his expressions of art have become far more patient and considerate.
